The Facts of the Geese Problem
*Geese eat up to 5lbs of grass a day.
*Geese defecate up to 2lbs of droppings a day. In some concentrated geese areas that equals up 600lbs of goose poop in one day.
*In our parks they defecate, it goes into the water, which cause huge algae blooms and deprive the water of oxygen and kill fish and potentially contaminate municipal water supplies.
*Landscaped lawns and parks are decimated by these geese and the Canada Goose population is expanding 10 to 17 percent each year.
*Exposures to goose droppings have been shown to be a health risk. Human pathogens such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Campylobacter (C-coli) have been found in Canada goose droppings.
*Resident Canada Geese populations can inflict significant damage on agricultural land by affecting water quality, causing crop loss and eventually erosion, as they strip ponds and riverbanks of the vegetation that anchors the soil.
*The public’s affection for the Canada Geese contributes to this problem. As quoted from one park superintendent “they may be cute but they are a real nuisance.”
